The port of Ravenna is the only commercial port in Emilia Romagna, and one of the most important ports on the Adriatic in terms of the volumes of goods it handles.
Partly thanks to its strategic position, it is a leader in Italy for commercial exchanges with markets to the East, the countries around the Mediterranean, and the Far East.
Its links with the country’s road and railway networks makes the port easy to reach from the principal markets in Italy and Europe.
The “Ravenna Port Hub” project, on which works have begun in 2022, is destined to reposition the port of Ravenna in a new competitive dimension.
The works involved in the project consist in: further deepening the sea bed to 13.5 m in the seaward canal and the outer port, and in deepening the Candiano canal to 12.5 m as far as the San Vitale dock, dredging up more than 4,700,000 m3 of material; building a new wharf approximately 1 km long to serve the new container terminal due to be built on the right bank of the Candiano canal in the Trattaroli area, which will be connected to the railway line; structural upgrading to comply with antiseismic legislation and adapt the existing wharves to the new, lower depth of the sea bed; building urban infrastructure and installations for the new logistic platforms in the port area, covering approximately 200 ha, reusing a part of the (appropriately treated) material dredged from the sea bed.
At a later date, the excavation of the sea bed will be taken further, to a depth of 14.5 m.
